Mountain Minimalism

Cortina Apartment by Studio RinaldiSki chalet apartments often fall into the cliche of sauna-like wood panelling with Heidi-inspired decorative details.  Not so for this apartment in the Italian resort of Cortina, which has been transformed by London-based architects Studio Rinaldi to combine the best of mountain style with contemporary cool.

The architects replaced the warren of rooms and corridors with an open-plan layout, offering full visibility of the terrace and the stunning view of the Dolomite mountains beyond as soon as one enters the apartment.  The wooden floorboards and wall panels are a nod to tradition, whilst the white walls and ceilings, frameless doorways and use of pocket doors add a sleek minimalist touch.  The furniture is likewise kept to a minimum in order to not to distract from the views.  Plenty of style and not a sauna in sight.

For accessories with a sculptural touch try the Pepe marble mirror from Menu or the Moose trophy from Moustache.  The photorealistic Scrapwood wallpaper from NLXL is great for recreating the wood panelling effect.
