White boxes might be a cliche for modernist houses, but when placed against the clear blue skies and emerald waters of the Mediterranean, the appeal of a dazzling white villa is easy to understand. Take, for instance, the Casa Del Acantilado in Alicante, designed by Fran Silvestre Architectos.
Located on a steep site with sweeping views across a bay, the house take the form of a white floating rectangular box, its angular planes and smooth surface cutting a sculptural figure against the craggy hillside. Inside the box, which contains the main living and bed rooms, floor-to-ceiling windows lead to a long balcony with glass balustrades running along the full length of the building, offering unobstructed views of the surrounding hills and sea below. A rectangular infinity pool sits on a lower platform, framed by dramatic double-height walls and a sculptural free-standing staircase. The decor inside is sleek and minimalist, focusing all attention on the expansive view outside. This is a slick, almost meditative space that makes a real mark on the environment.
