25 Columbus Circle Apartment by Joel Sanders Architect

New-built apartments are often accused of being boxy and soulless.  Not so for this 3,000 square feet apartment at the prestigious Columbus Circle development in New York, which has benefited from a clever make-over by Joel Sanders Architect.

The architect wanted to combine the best of loft and apartment living, a goal they achieved by replacing walls with retractable partitions and by using free-standing furniture and fixtures, creating islands around which the residents can circulate.  Different areas of the apartment are demarcated by different floor surfaces: sumptuous brown carpet in the lounge area, dark hardwood floors in the kitchen and common areas and the other areas in glossy white.  We particularly like the large free-standing sofa with seating on two sides, which creates a central focal feature linking the lounge, kitchen and dining areas as well as the retractable partition wall in the main bedroom in the upper level, which transforms the lounge area of the bedroom into a guest bedroom.

As a result of this clever configuration the floor-to-ceiling curtain windows do not touch any internal walls, thereby allowing maximum access to the stunning wraparound views of Central Park below.  We can't think of a better design to capture the spirit of New York.
