Trailer Treasure

Vista Mini House by Escape

Fed up with city life?  Long for an escape to the rural idyll but can't quite afford a country mansion?  Wisconsin-based Escape has the solution with a trailer home perfect for design lovers who wish to connect to nature.

Vista is a beautifully designed and superbly crafted pod home that can be taken anywhere on a trailer.  The exterior of the mini house has the look and feel of a modernist masterpiece with cedar cladding, dark steel accents and acres of windows flooding the interior with plenty of natural light.  The standard unit has 170 square feet of interior space but feels far more spacious, thanks to the extensive use of light pine furniture, including a double bed which doubles as a sofa / day bed and well built cabinets.  The unit also benefits from double glazing, air conditioning and fully functional kitchen and bathroom.  There is even an option for solar panels and composting toilets for those who prefer to go off-grid.

This is a small but perfectly formed mini house which should go a long way to rehabilitate the reputation of trailer homes.

Product Inspiration

Furniture with simple designs made with natural materials work best in small spaces.  The Emea high table and counter stool from Alki, for example, look beautifully sleek in dark stained oak and the extra height helps to create a sense of space too.  Versatile storage units such as the Plus concrete storage system from Lyon Beton works well too.

The simply brilliant natural wood veneer wall lights from LZF add tonnes of style to even the smallest spaces.  The simple shape of the iClub is very effective, for a touch of design flair try the Hi-Collar.  The Core table lamp from New Works looks super slick and works wonderfully.

Choose accessories which combine design flair with functionality to save on space but not on style.  The Silo container from Incipit, for example, combines a container and bowl in one beautifully crafted vessel.  The W/W carafe and glasses set from Menu is equally sleek and works a treat too.  The aGroove bluetooth speaker from Kreafunk is as stylish as it is functional.

Shutter House by State of Kin

Japanese zen style goes far beyond minimalist white spaces. It is about thoughtful spaces which encourage the contemplation of light, colours, textures and shapes - the building blocks of nature and beauty. The Shutter House in Perth is a great example.

Terrazzo Things from Lick My Brick

There was a time when the use of marble was largely restricted to floors, posh kitchen counters and grave statutes. And then, at some point around the mid-noughties, marble was everywhere. Could the same be happening to terrazzo?
