Mediterranean Cool

Puro Hotel by OHLAB

Many people associate Mediterranean style with a twee mix of terracotta tiles and an aqua blue colour scheme.  The refurbishment of the Puro Hotel in Palma de Mallorca by architectural practice OHLAB shows how refreshingly slick a contemporary Mediterranean design scheme could be.

The Puro is a boutique hotel in the heart of Palma de Mallorca with 51 rooms, all of which have different configurations.  The brief is to provide a unifying scheme which combines the historic charms of the building (an 18th century palace) with sleek modern design.

The architects distilled the essence of Mediterranean style by combining local materials such as oak, limestone, hemp rope and raffia carpets with custom-made items including fabrics made using traditional looms and metal carts with a sleek, almost industrial look.  The bathrooms, especially the sculptural free-standing bathtubs, are designed as an integrated part of the rooms and share the same pared-back design.

Overall, the rooms ooze contemporary cool without feeling cold, thanks to the warm colour palette and layers of textures.  This is a cleverly re-imagined Mediterranean design scheme, with not a terracotta tile in sight.

The Puro Hotel, designed by OHLAB, is a winner of the INSIDE World Festival of Interiors award 2016 in the hotel category.

Inject some contemporary cool into Mediterranean style with the Raphia armchair from Casamania, the Zumitz low table from Alki and the Smokestack fireplace from Frederik Roije.

The natural wood veneer lights from LZF, such as the Air table light, look wonderfully contemporary and organic.  We also like the warmth of the Bowl table light from New Works, which resembles a lantern.  For a real portable lantern fit for a cool outdoor dinner party, what about the wireless, rechargeable version of the Bell Mondo OLED light from Blackbody?

A great way to add a touch of rustic charm is to use the photo-realistic Scrapwood print wallpaper from NLXL.  The Cauliflower container from Sena Gu looks great as a table centrepiece and for the perfect contemporary garden accessory check out the Dish of Desire bird feeding table from Frederik Roije.

Japanese zen style goes far beyond minimalist white spaces. It is about thoughtful spaces which encourage the contemplation of light, colours, textures and shapes - the building blocks of nature and beauty. The Shutter House in Perth is a great example.

Terrazzo Things from Lick My Brick

There was a time when the use of marble was largely restricted to floors, posh kitchen counters and grave statutes. And then, at some point around the mid-noughties, marble was everywhere. Could the same be happening to terrazzo?
