Alternative Universe

Glass Pagoda by JCP

The exhibition halls of the Milan Furniture Fair can be an endless, monotonous stream of same-ness, so imagine our surprise when we stumbled upon the JCP stand.

JCP is a new and rather quirky brand with an otherworldly philosophy.  Its website describes the brand as "an imaginative universe that transforms our normality by encouraging us to reflect on our own way of life, here on Earth".  Glass Pagoda, the theme behind its display in Milan, is no less impenetrable; the products on show puzzling and exhilarating in equal measures.

Look beyond some of the more attention-grabbing designs, such as the Fylgrade peel-to-reveal multi-layer upholstered sofa or Ligomancer, the seating system which seeks to replace foam and upholstery with semi-elastic straps wrapped around metal frames, and we saw some delightful designs with perhaps more popular appeal.

Threeve, Beeto and Rone, for instance, are three super glossy robot-inspired lamps (designed by Richard Hutten) which would look perfectly at home as part of a slick, minimalist design scheme.  The Perflect cabinets, designed by Sam Baron, plays with perspective in an undeniably cool way; whilst the Agaxa saddle stools by CTRLZAK are almost cute.  The Naia mirrors, also from CTRLZAK, uses different marbles to create planet-like patterns in an effective and beautiful design.

We're not sure all these products will make their way to your living room anytime soon but we do hope to see them in the next funky hotel or quirky office we visit.

Japanese zen style goes far beyond minimalist white spaces. It is about thoughtful spaces which encourage the contemplation of light, colours, textures and shapes - the building blocks of nature and beauty. The Shutter House in Perth is a great example.

Terrazzo Things from Lick My Brick

There was a time when the use of marble was largely restricted to floors, posh kitchen counters and grave statutes. And then, at some point around the mid-noughties, marble was everywhere. Could the same be happening to terrazzo?
