Zen Cabin

EFH Hochleitner House by LP Architektur

After the excesses of Christmas, wouldn't it be great to start the new year in a state of zen?  If you are after peace and serenity then the EFH Hochleitner House in Embach, Austria is just what the doctor ordered.

Designed by LP Architektur, the house is a simple cabin with slanting roofs located on a sloping site.  The classic shape of the building is emphasised by the sharp lines and use of rough timber cladding.  Adornment is kept to a minimum, from the large frameless windows to the clean roof line without the distraction of eaves.

A calm, minimalist aesthetic prevails inside.  The interior space is mostly clad in timber with accents of concrete and glass.  Furniture is kept to a minimum with built-in features, such as a spectacular double-height bookshelf, adding further to the sense of order.  A central staircase, cleverly lit from a skylight above as well as through an open bookshelf on one wall, provides a strong visual connection between the ground floor and the mezzanine.

We can't think of a more inspiring place to plan for a day's skiing or, perhaps, to contemplate new year resolutions.

Product Inspiration

Simple, sculptural furniture would look great in such a minimalist space.  The Clay table from Desalto would look, great, especially when teamed with the Triku chair from Alki.  For a touch of Nordic cool try the cocooning Tembo lounge chair from New Works.

Keep lighting sleek and unobtrusive.  Afterall, what is the point of competing against the beautiful views from the enormous windows?  The Air table lamp from LZF is made of natural wood veneers and look sculptural and naturalistic at the same time.  For something more minimalist try the Table Tower table light from Frederik Roije or the Karl Johan table lamp from New Works.

For accessories that are sculptural and naturalistic look no further than the ceramics collection of Sena Gu.  We particularly like the abstract and poetic qualities of the Tree Vase.  The simple but effective App wall hanger from Incipit would work a treat here as well.  Want to replicate the sleek wood panelling look of the cabin?  Why not try the Scrapwood wallpaper designed by Piet Hein Eek for NLXL?

Shutter House by State of Kin

Japanese zen style goes far beyond minimalist white spaces. It is about thoughtful spaces which encourage the contemplation of light, colours, textures and shapes - the building blocks of nature and beauty. The Shutter House in Perth is a great example.

Terrazzo Things from Lick My Brick

There was a time when the use of marble was largely restricted to floors, posh kitchen counters and grave statutes. And then, at some point around the mid-noughties, marble was everywhere. Could the same be happening to terrazzo?
