Power to the People

Lamp & Socket by Lotte Douwes

Our lives may be enhanced by mobile and computer devices, but until further advances in battery technology we remain slaves to ugly charging cables.  Young Dutch designer Lotte Douwes (also featured here) has designed a product which at least helps to reduce the clutter and tangles caused by them.

Lamp & Socket is based on the clever idea of transforming suspension light fittings into power sockets.  Multiple fittings could be suspended above a table, for example, with some of them used for lights and others as sockets for charging devices.  This is a simple and elegant way to provide power to tables away from wall sockets and helps to banish the trip hazard of cables snaking around the floor.

Product Inspiration

We love unusual furniture with clever functional designs, such as the airplane trolleys from Bordbar, which can be customised to fit different storage needs, or the typographically inspired ABC bookcase from Saporiti.

Lotte Douwes' Lamp & Socket is not the only multifunctional light around.  Check out the Mr Ed table light from Functionals, which doubles as a bookend, or the Asterisco table light cum book rest from LZF.

For beautifully designed and highly functional accessories from the Netherlands look no further than the Senz storm-proof umbrellas and the RFID wallets from Secrid.

Terrazzo Things from Lick My Brick
