Dining tables are too often either a messy depository of detritus from our daily lives or an expressionless blank slate in the middle of our living rooms. Young Dutch designer Lotte Douwes has designed a set of tabletop accessories which aims to return the dining table to its rightful place at the centre of our social lives.
Debuted at the Salone Satellite, part of the Salone del Mobile in Milan, Table Landscapes is a set of display podiums and platforms which create a sculptural landscape when put together with each other. The sleek and colourful units are made from a composite material which started life as waste material from the coal industry.
Table Landscapes is a great way to display food, flowers and other objects; a contemporary centrepiece which restores a sense of style and occasion to the dining table.

A beautiful centrepiece such as the Table Landscapes calls for a beautiful dining table. We particularly like the natural elegance of the Emea dining table in walnut from Alki and the sculptural simplicity of the Iblea dining table from Desalto.
A well chosen pendant light suspended above a dining table is the best way to enhance the atmosphere of the dining room. A great choice for a round table is the Spiro suspension light from LZF. This looks discrete from a distance, the full beauty of the wood veneer curls revealed only when you sit down beneath it. For a more light-hearted and flamboyant choice what about a series of Twee T. suspension lights from Casamania above a long table?
A good centrepiece should make a bold statement and be functional at the same time. The Metrobowl from Frederik Roije and the Slide serving tray from Finell are both great examples.

There was a time when the use of marble was largely restricted to floors, posh kitchen counters and grave statutes. And then, at some point around the mid-noughties, marble was everywhere. Could the same be happening to terrazzo?
