Zen Cabin
After the excesses of Christmas, wouldn't it be great to start the new year in a state of zen? If you are after peace and serenity then the EFH Hochleitner House in Embach, Austria is just what the doctor ordered.
Designed by LP Architektur, the house is a simple cabin with slanting roofs located on a sloping site. The classic shape of the building is emphasised by the sharp lines and use of rough timber cladding. Adornment is kept to a minimum, from the large frameless windows to the clean roof line without the distraction of eaves.
A calm, minimalist aesthetic prevails inside. The interior space is mostly clad in timber with accents of concrete and glass. Furniture is kept to a minimum with built-in features, such as a spectacular double-height bookshelf, adding further to the sense of order. A central staircase, cleverly lit from a skylight above as well as through an open bookshelf on one wall, provides a strong visual connection between the ground floor and the mezzanine.
We can't think of a more inspiring place to plan for a day's skiing or, perhaps, to contemplate new year resolutions.
