Flower Power

W.I.N.D. House by UNStudio

The Netherlands is famous for its flowers and also for its great design, so it is perhaps appropriate that Amsterdam-based UNStudio would design a house in the province of North Holland that somewhat resembles a flower.

The W.I.N.D. house is a contemporary family home in an idyllic location fronted by open fields and backed by woodland.  In order to maximise the views and to optimise circulation between the different zones, the architects designed a house with four flower petal-like wings radiating from a central open staircase.  The gently curving facades of the petals are glazed in front to showcase the view and clad in patterned tiles at the back to provide privacy.  Thanks to this clever layout the interior spaces are well delineated and yet flow into each other with ease and fluidity.  The house is built to high standards of sustainability and automation with waste heat recovery, solar panels and a state-of-the-art system which puts the control of all electrical and mechanical installations at the touch of a touchscreen pad.

This is a very modern and welcoming house which puts the needs of its inhabitants first and foremost; great design which will no doubt last the test of time.

Slick Style

Product Inspiration

Nature works well as a source of inspiration for furniture, especially when natural motifs have been abstracted to create slick, streamlined forms.  The Seatshells chair from Frederik Roije and the Fjord armchair from Moroso, for example, are both inspired by the shape of seashells.

Wood is a fantastically versatile material which showcases nature at its best.  LZF lights are all made of natural wood veneers and come in multiple shapes and sizes.  The Agatha suspension light and Mini Mikado floor light are both inspired by flowers and both look stunning.

Sena Gu is a ceramicist whose creations are heavily inspired by nature.  We love the sculptural simplicity of her Tree Vase and the fun and functional Cauliflower Container.
