Cabin Connection

Katskills Refuge by Corpus Studio | Do BlogWhen asked to design a mountain retreat which evokes the ambience of traditional rustic cabins, Paris-based Corpus Studio came up with a  design concept which looks resolutely contemporary but yet totally in tune with the timeless beauty of the surrounding countryside.

Planned for a location in the picturesque Catskill mountains in upstate New York, the building is in the form of five interconnected "cabins".  These are designed to be modular, which provides for easy expansion in the future.  The cabins each have their individually-shaped steeply slanting roof with flat skylights, creating a stunningly sculptural shape, an effect emphasised by the use of wooden tiles to clad the entire exterior of the building.

The interior design scheme also draws on the local vernacular but with a contemporary touch.  The walls are clad in broad planks of timber, all bathing in the warm glow of natural light streaming in through the large windows and skylights.  The traditional fireplace has been replaced with a circular fire pit with an organically shaped flue which echoes the contours of the mountains.  The selection of furniture and lighting is surprisingly contemporary and minimalist, the overall effect surprisingly comforting and harmonious.  This is a beautifully designed refuge well worth retreating into.
