Madrid-based designer Teresa Sapey's renovation of an apartment in London is a wonderful showcase of how to apply contemporary design in a classic space.
The 667 square metre space was created by knocking through two adjacent apartments in a prestigious mansion block next to the Royal Albert Hall. The structure has been stripped back to highlight classic features such as the tall ceilings, arched hallways and enormous sash windows, accentuated by a monochrome colour palette with the dramatic black of the service areas and hallways in contrast to the sparkling white of the living areas.
Into this blank canvas the designer injected a contemporary selection of furniture and lighting with focus on rounded shapes, brass accents and the occasional splash of bright colour. We particularly like the use of round sofas to create flow and interest in the main living room and the use of of multiple pendant lights at different heights in the hallways to create rhythm.
This is a great example of how contemporary design can work very well in classic spaces to create a stylish and comfortable living space.
Slick contemporary style furniture works very well in classic spaces. The Gentry sofa from Moroso, Shortwave chair from Diesel Living and the Meduse dining table from Casamania all combine sleek modern design with timeless elegance.
Simple, sculptural pendants can be used to great effect in long hallways and corridors. Try the Raindrop suspension light from LZF, Skylight Tower suspension light from Frederik Roije and the Cape suspension light from Moustache.
Use quirky or bold accessories such as the Heirloom vase from Moustache, Cauliflower container from Sena Gu and the Cosmic Lunar salad bowl from Diesel Living help to bring a touch of contemporary style to classic spaces.
