Villa Schoorl by Studio Prototype
Schoorl may sound like a misspelt educational institution but is in fact a picturesque village nestled amongst the largest sand dunes in the Netherlands. It is here that a family commissioned architects Studio Prototype to design and build a modern house based on the shape of the black barns common in the area.
The architects took the simple form of the barn as a starting point and carved out various volumes which fulfil different functions, such as the bathrooms or the library. These volumes take on different proportions and forms whilst retaining the same basic shape of the barn, thereby creating a natural flow between the spaces. The use of materials (black metal, glass, light maple wood and sand coloured concrete) also helps to bring the volumes together, creating a functional and beautiful living space that is perfectly in tune with the needs of a modern family.
