Perfect Imperfection

Constructs and Glitches Collection by Christopher Stuart

We have previously covered the sculptural and minimalist works of Luur, the interdisciplinary studio of American designer Christopher Stuart.  He recently showcased a new collection of furniture at The Future Perfect during the design week in New York which is no less intriguing.

The "Constructs" part of the collection de- and reconstructs familiar furniture objects to highlight the beauty of distortions.  The Zig Zag bench, for example, transforms the humble bench into a delicate object which challenges preconceptions of strength and balance.

The starting point of the "Glitches" collection is more conceptual.  The designs are based on glitches in CAD (computer aided design) drawings, the unintentional imperfections immortalised in polished steel structures which are part sculpture and part functional furniture.

Product Inspiration

Deconstruct and reconstruct with simple forms to create sculptural yet functional furniture such as the Element small table from Desalto and the Assemblage shelving system from Seletti.

The Lampscapes suspension light from Frederik Roije and the Escape suspension light from LZF are more examples of constructivist beauties.

We love the flexible resin rings and bowls from Corsi, which shows how apparently imperfect and messy forms can be transformed into something sculptural and beautiful.
