Monoform Living by Produce Workshop

Frame of Mind

Designers are often accused of putting their creative visions above that of their clients, but this apartment in Singapore designed by Produce Workshop shows how you can create compellingly original interior spaces when the designers apply their creativity sensitively to accommodate the client's personality.

The starting point for the design of this two-storey apartment is the client's collection of art and how this reflects on his ethos of life.  In particular the designers are inspired but the works of local artist Jane Lee, who sees the medium, form and subject matter as inseparable elements which together create a single, unified work of art.  The result is a unique design based around a single continuous black metal wire structure which is part sculpture and part functional object.  The monoform structure creates a continuous flow which ties the different spaces of the apartment together, fulfilling different functions in different spaces: as a bookshelf in the living room, wine rack and support for the dining table in the kitchen area and as a wardrobe in the dressing room.   This is a highly personal and personalised design which is how interior design should be: living space as a reflection of a person's style of life.

Sculptural Style

Product Inspiration

The monoform structure of this apartment creates a series of slightly austere spaces against which furniture with strong graphic prints, such as the Fishbone table from Moroso, would look great.  You could also try to create your own multifunctional monoform with shelving systems such as the ABC bookcase from Saporiti and the Opus Incertum bookshelf from Casamania.

A space with such dominant sculptural shapes would benefit from slick, discrete lighting such as the Sepal table light from Blackbody and the Skylight Tower suspension light from Frederik Roije.

Slick lifestyle accessories would fit the masculine style of this apartment like a glove.  Try the Cardslide RFID wallet from Secrid or the Bellows sling bag from Nava.
