India is a kaleidoscope of colours, shapes and patterns. This is especially so in the city of Mumbai, where slick new apartment blocks stand cheek to jowl with the improvised dwellings of the slums. Architects Shilpa and Pinkish Shah at S+PS Architects took inspiration from the latter and created a house with fascinating upcycled features which celebrates the visual richness of the city.
The eye-catching front facade of the house is a collage of old wooden windows and doors, a small protruding balcony with wraparound blue glass walls the only sign of the modernity which lies within. One of the walls of the internal courtyard is covered with old pipes cleverly laid out to resemble bamboo. On the roof terrace old columns are used as a decorative feature, whilst a patchwork of old tiles is used to create a feature wall. The interior space balances the eclectic upcyled features with sleek contemporary touches (such as white marble floors with brass inlays) to create a tranquil haven.
This is a great example of how upcycling can, when applied with intelligence and wit, create spaces of style rather than kitsch.

For a clever recycling idea check out the Rememberme chair and table from Casamania. These are made of used jeans and other garments which are then set in resin to create unique pieces of furniture.
We love the patchwork effect of some of the decoration in the Collage House, a style reflected in the Escape suspension light from LZF. Something with an industrial flavour, such as the concrete floor lamp from Lyon Beton, would look good too.
The Pipework candlesticks from Nick Fraser are a clever use of metal pipes, whilst the Hang On wall hangers from Normann Copenhagen are witty and functional at the same time.

When it comes to summer living, few do so as effortlessly stylishly as the Italians. Consider the Masseria Le Torri, a beautifully restored 18th century farmhouse not far from the coastal town of Polignano a Mare in Puglia.
