Capturing the fleeting beauty of nature is the raison d'être of Andrea Forti and Eleonora Dal Farra, the experimental design duo behind Alcarol. Their latest collection of furniture takes us on an evocative journey through the woodland, where you could almost hear the birdsong and smell the scent of pine.
Phellem, the outermost layer of tree bark, is the name of Alcarol's latest collection of tables. These are made with segments of tree bark, often laid in contrasting patterns, which are then set in a special bio-sourced transparent resin in a process that mimics the way a tree's resin hardens and protects its delicate inner layers. This showcases the extraordinary colours and texture of natural tree bark, each as unique to the tree as our fingerprints are to us.
The Phellem collection of tables by Alcarol was exhibited at the Salone Satellite of the Milan Furniture Fair.
Natural wood is a wonderfully beautiful and versatile material for furniture. Alki specialises in using solid oak and their tables, such as the Emea, are great showcases of the material. We also like the rustic shape of the Altay chair from Coedition and the sculptural shape of the Wendela barstool from Functionals.
Natural wood veneers is a fantastic material for lights. The Link suspension light and Chou table light from LZF, for example, creates a lovely warm light and showcases the wood grain pattern of the veneers. The Material pendant from New Works is available in oak, which works beautifully well in a natural design scheme.
Bring the outdoor in with the photorealistic wallpaper of NLXL, especially the log-cabin style Scrapwood print, designed by Piet Hein Eek. For a touch of contemporary style try the Aurora wooden tray from Incipit and the wood inlay iPhone cases from Wood'd.

There was a time when the use of marble was largely restricted to floors, posh kitchen counters and grave statutes. And then, at some point around the mid-noughties, marble was everywhere. Could the same be happening to terrazzo?
