Furniture and Lighting from H220430

August 30, 2016

Japanese Fancy

Furniture and lighting should first and foremost be functional, but sometimes a touch of whimsy can turn unremarkable objects into something more thought-provoking.

This is how we feel about the fanciful furniture and lighting designed by Tokyo-based H220430 (the name represents the date the designed collective was founded, on 30 April in the 22nd year of the Heisei era, i.e. 2010).  The Unusual Chair, with one broken leg, is a commentary on how abnormal life is since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.  The Sunrising Lamp tries to recreate the sense of optimism with the rising sun, whilst the Larsen C vase draws attention to the melting icecaps in Antartica.  Last but not least we love the pure, unadulterated fun of the Balloon chair and bench.

Product Inspiration

Who said furniture can't be functional as well as fun and thought-provoking?  Just look at the A La Carte table from Seletti and the Rememberme chair and Robox shelf from Casamania.

The Moto wall light from Moustache is surreally fun as well as functional, as is the Lampscape floor light from Frederik Roije.  And how can anyone fail to be amused by the Monkey light from Seletti?

For a wall hanger with real personality check out the Pipework wall hanger from Nick Fraser.  We also like the quirkiness of the Here (Thimble) ice bucket from Ghidini 1961 and the fun and elegant Laura apron from Ugi.
