American designer Fernando Mastrangelo uses cement mixed with unusual materials such as coloured sand, salt, coffee and glass to create intriguing furniture and decorative objects which showcase the raw beauty of the materials.
For his Ghost collection, blocks of white tinted concrete are machine carved and then hand polished into a series of tables which celebrate the beauty of pure geometric forms. The Thaw collection is a play on textures with its juxtaposition of the rough and the smooth, an effect also exploited in a series of wall mirrors. We also like the Drift collection of concrete shelves and tables with their strata of coloured sand, as if they have been carved from unknown materials mined from outer space.
Full of contrasts and contradictions, Fernando Mastrangelo's works straddle the border between art and design and are perfect as sculptural statement pieces.
Simple, sculptural shapes work well in lighting. Try the Swirl suspension light from LZF, the Lampscapes suspension light from Frederik Roije and the Cave table light from Moustache.
Concrete specialists Lyon Beton has a wonderful collection of accessories including the Life in Progress clock, the Pipeline stem vase and the Cloud toilet paper shelf.
