Mexico in Manhattan

New York Apartment in Mexican Style by Dmitry ReutovWhen Russian interior designer Dmitry Reutov was given carte blanche to renovate a 55 square metre apartment in New York, his thoughts, surprisingly perhaps, turned to the bright sunshine and saturated hues of Mexico.

As soon as you enter the apartment your senses go into overdrive, starting with the exuberant colour scheme: mint green floor and dusty pink walls with gradient wallpaper for contrast and touches of terrazzo and copper for accent. Voluptuous curves abound, from the furniture and window arches to the lights and the lozenge-shaped kitchen counter, adding a sense of drama and whimsy.

This Instagram-friendly apartment is not just fun and good looks. There are numerous clever features such as the stepped storage unit behind the bed, accessed via a tall arched door, and the orange-tinted transparent circular opening between the kitchen and the hallway. And how can we ignore the profusion of cacti, standing majestically against the candy pink walls? We can't think of a more surprising and inspiring respite from the concrete and leaden skies of the city outside.
