The Luna cabinet is a an eye-catchingly original cabinet designed by Patricia Urquiola for Coedition. The cabinet takes the form of a large drum-shaped shelf resting on two intersecting X-shaped planks of MDF, the end result somewhat resembling a face or perhaps a lighthouse. The drum-shaped shelf is divided into two compartments: the upper half functions as an open shelf whilst the lower half works as a cupboard with two swivelling covers. This extraordinary and lovable design is perfect as a centrepiece in a quirky design scheme.
Patricia Urquiola is one of the most influential furniture designers working today. She was born in Oviedo in Spain but now lives and works in Milan. Urquiola trained as an architect and worked with Achille Castiglioni and Piero Lissoni before starting her own studio in 2001. She has since designed numerous products for leading furniture brands including Moroso, B&B Italia, Molteni & C and Kartell. Urquiola’s designs are unconventional, emphatic and experimental; blending humanist sensibilities and technical expertise – qualities that also inform her work as an architect.
