Lost in Dreams

Dream and Maze by Studio 10

Tourists have long flocked to the city of Guilin in China, famous for its spectacular limestone hills towering over serene lakes and rivers. Those who stay at The Other Place, a local guest house, however, may be surprised by scenery which is rather unexpected but no less spectacular.

Architect Shi Zhou of Studio 10 has designed two beguiling rooms inspired by the "impossible" drawings of Dutch artist MC Escher. Maze is painted in a soothing palette of forest green, peach and white, whilst Dream is swathed in delicate shades of pink, white and black. Both rooms feature double-height ceilings and slanting roofs, providing the perfect backdrop for numerous "impossible" staircases, some of which lead to doors which go nowhere. All the doors are painted the same colour and have the same rounded frames as the wardrobes, which add further to the visual disorientation. These are rooms you can get delightfully lost in, especially after a few stiff drinks.
