Lean Living Machine

Small Home Smart Home by LAAB

Hong Kong has some of the most densely populated urban areas in the world, so it is unsurprising that the city is home to some of the most creative smart living solutions in the world.

The brief for this apartment is simple: the young couple (and their 3 cats) wants a large kitchen, guest bedroom, full size bathtub, home cinema, gym and cat-friendly features - all in an apartment of 309 square feet.  The architects at LAAB rose to the challenge with an ingenious design scheme which transformed the minuscule space into a high-tech multi-functional living machine.

The best part of an entire wall of the apartment is dedicated to the kitchen, but in order not to block the windows the cabinets can be retracted into the ceiling space at a push of a button.  A wall panel housing an enormous TV screen slides out and transforms the space into a home cinema, where guests can lounge on seating on two tiers.  The latter is made possible by the use of a moveable platform placed over a full sized bathtub, which doubles up as a spare guest bed.

The apartment is replete with sliding panels and clever storage compartments to make the most of the tiny space.  The architects even designed elevated walkways and other fun features to entertain the cats.  Afterall, however big or small a home is, we all know who really is the boss.
