LA Cool

LA Arts District Loft by Marmol RadzinerThe archetypal loft apartment might have been born in New York, but this apartment shows that when it comes to effortless cool the West coast is hard to beat.

Californian architects and construction firm Marmol Radziner converted this two-bedroom apartment in a renovated toy factory in the Arts District of Los Angeles into a sophisticated open-plan bachelor's pad.  Instead of partition walls the architects used clever ways to delineate the different zones of the apartment.  The main living area, for example, is on a raised platform which creates a feeling of intimacy as well as strengthening the connection with the view outside.  The piece de resistance is the custom-made rotating bookshelves separating the living area and the master suite.  When turned 90 degrees, these create discrete openings between the two areas, allowing even more light to flood into the bedroom.  The use of dark wood, metals and leather throughout the apartment complement the exposed concrete surfaces well, creating a masculine vibe which feels warm and welcoming.
