Refined Interaction

Watering Can and Coffee Table by George Riding

During our visit to New Designers 2016 we came across these beautifully crafted brass watering cans designed by George Riding.  Sculptural, refined and functional, they reflect the designer's focus on user interaction and experience.

The same can be seen at his Wire Series Coffee Table, an elegantly minimal coffee table made with metal rods.  The table is accessorised with wood and marble trays with grooves underneath that are designed to slide on top of the rods like trays on rails, thereby introducing playful interaction between the user and what is usually a rather passive object.

Elevating everyday interactions into thought-provoking experiences, isn't that good design is all about?

George Riding is a graduate of Northumbria School of Design.  The Indoor Watering Can and the Wire Series Coffee Table are part of his graduation project.

Product Inspiration

We love the cool sculptural look of George Riding's designs, just like the Mini Clay occasional tables from Desalto, the Tablefields coffee table from Frederik Roije and the FUWL Cage table from Menu.

For lighting that combines sculptural beauty and simplicity check out the Air table light from LZF, the Lampscapes suspension light from Frederik Roije and the Dancing pendant light from Menu.

Just like the watering can from George Riding, the accessories from Ghidini 1961 are beautifully hand-crafted from brass.  We particularly like the Here thimble-shaped wine bucket designed by Studio Job, the leaf shaped Florida bowl designed by Nika Zupanc and the Tip Top tray designed by Richard Hutten.

Japanese zen style goes far beyond minimalist white spaces. It is about thoughtful spaces which encourage the contemplation of light, colours, textures and shapes - the building blocks of nature and beauty. The Shutter House in Perth is a great example.

Terrazzo Things from Lick My Brick

There was a time when the use of marble was largely restricted to floors, posh kitchen counters and grave statutes. And then, at some point around the mid-noughties, marble was everywhere. Could the same be happening to terrazzo?
