Quirky Cool

The Art of Apartment Living by Art Buro - London

Small can be beautiful.  In the case of this diminutive but perfectly formed apartment in London, also functional, clever and very cool too.  The design is by Art Buro, who applied similar aesthetics they used previously in a super chic Parisian apartment (profiled here) but with a very different ambience as a result.

The split-level apartment is full of clever design ideas which makes its 45 square metres feel much more spacious.  A conical shaped ceiling light draws the eyes down to the main living space, dominated by a double height window which floods the living room with natural light.  The space is lavishly appointed with sculptural pieces of furniture, outsized art and a very sleek fireplace, all against cool grey walls and floor.

The kitchen counter is shaped like a crate and has been painted black to separate the living space from the kitchen and dining area at the back of the apartment.  The floor, walls and ceiling of this area as well as the tall kitchen cabinet are lined with pale wood panels, which makes the space feel larger and more distinct from the living area.  The same pale wood finish is also used for the timber grill which forms the wall of the mezzanine bedroom, thereby drawing your eyes upwards and emphasising the height of the space.

The mezzanine is reached through a simple white staircase with integrated storage space, against which the black freestanding handrail strikes a graphic statement.  The bedroom is dominated by a huge round mirror and a beautifully crafted cabinet which opens up to reveal a dressing table.  The low cabinet behind the bed has a front panel with long strips of pale wood, which again helps to stretch the space visually.

This is a masterpiece which shows how great design can squeeze maximum functionality and style from even the smallest spaces.

Using quirky storage units is a great way to add personality and functionality to a small space.  The Renaissance shelf from Seletti has a gothic touch and is also completely modular.  The Stick shelving system from Menu is modular too, but has much more of an industrial look.  The glass and metal Florence shelf from New Works is sleek and elegant, perfect for displaying precious objects.

You don't need a dramatic double-height space for suspension lights to look great.  The Agata suspension light from Incipit, for example, is simple but looks strikingly graphic.  Quirky designs such as the Lampscapes floor light from Frederik Roije also great for creating interesting focal points.  Feeling lavish?  What about re-creating the circular mirror of this apartment with the Lucky Eye OLED mirror light from Blackbody?

Simple, sleek and functional accessories are best for small spaces.  The Silo containers from Incipit combine the functions of a jar and a small dish.  We also like the slick Spire wall hooks from Finell and the simple but functional W/W carafe and glass set from Menu.
