Sculptural Cool

Kloof Road House by Nico van der Meulen Architects

The desire to leave a mark in the world is part of human nature.  For a lucky few, this means building a house with a real sculptural presence that is unlike anything else.  The remarkable Kloof Road House in Johannesburg is one such house.

Designed by Werner van der Meulen of architectural firm Nico van der Meulen, this substantial family home has generously proportioned rooms that connect seamlessly with the outdoor spaces, united by a strikingly sculptural structure made of steel, concrete and glass.  Folded dark grey steel sheets create sharp angles and multiple facets, creating a sense of dynamism.  The effect is especially strong in the front entrance, where the folds of the steel are emphasised with strip lights, and also in the overhanging porch next to the pool and the stunning internal staircase, which looks like a figure from a Futurist painting.

The house is furnished with sleek contemporary furniture, mostly in dark grey and neutrals, which exude masculinity and complement the structure of the building well.  However, we suspect the owners will be spending most of their time outdoors, perhaps lounging under the spectacular porch, admiring the koi carp in their cantilevered pond between dips in the pool.  It is good indeed, to be able to leave a mark in the world.

The high-tech OLED lights from Blackbody work well in a masculine, sculptural space.  Try the Teka table light, for instance.  The Sliced Sphere suspension lights from Frederik Roije work equally well, especially when installed in a cluster.  The rechargeable Piknik portable lantern from LZF is perfect for the outdoor spaces.

Slick and stylish accessories are perfect to complement a sculptural space.  The Slide serving tray from Finell and the Wine Breather from Menu are great examples.  For a decorative touch try the Baltazar candle from Andrej Urem.
