Rational Naturalism
Concrete and wood are great design bedfellows, as this slick and serene house in Bregenz by Dietrich Untertrifaller Architected illustrates.
Externally, this house has the restrained austerity of a modernist masterpiece, with its plain concrete walls and vast expanse of glass windows. The use of timber for part of the cladding as well as on the ceilings and floors throughout the building provides a visual link between the interior and exterior.
Inside, the house is a haven of peace and tranquility. The layout is straight-forward and rational, which minimises distractions from the magnificent views of lake Constance outside. The interior decor is in tune with the simplicity of the building. The emphasis on natural wood and the monochrome colour palette adds to the feeling of calmness. This is a great example of how a slick design scheme can be both rational and warm at the same time.
