Rational Naturalism

House D in Bregenz by Dietrich Untertrifaller Architekten

Concrete and wood are great design bedfellows, as this slick and serene house in Bregenz by Dietrich Untertrifaller Architected illustrates.

Externally, this house has the restrained austerity of a modernist masterpiece, with its plain concrete walls and vast expanse of glass windows.  The use of timber for part of the cladding as well as on the ceilings and floors throughout the building provides a visual link between the interior and exterior.

Inside, the house is a haven of peace and tranquility.  The layout is straight-forward and rational, which minimises distractions from the magnificent views of lake Constance outside.  The interior decor is in tune with the simplicity of the building.  The emphasis on natural wood and the monochrome colour palette adds to the feeling of calmness.  This is a great example of how a slick design scheme can be both rational and warm at the same time.

The restrained style and neutral colour of the Gentry sofa from Moroso would look wonderful in the Bregenz house, as would the Biga table and Makil chair in natural oak, both from Alki.

A simple, sleek wall light such as the iClub from LZF looks great and is relatively inobtrusive.  The Core table lamp from New Works would work equally well.  For a simple and slick ceiling light try the Skylight Tower suspension light from Frederik Roije.

The W/W carafe and glasses set from Menu works well and is in tune with the aesthetics of this stylish house.  For functional and sleek personal accessories in the same style try the stormproof umbrella from Senz and the Ora Lattea watch from Nava.

Shutter House by State of Kin

Japanese zen style goes far beyond minimalist white spaces. It is about thoughtful spaces which encourage the contemplation of light, colours, textures and shapes - the building blocks of nature and beauty. The Shutter House in Perth is a great example.

Terrazzo Things from Lick My Brick

There was a time when the use of marble was largely restricted to floors, posh kitchen counters and grave statutes. And then, at some point around the mid-noughties, marble was everywhere. Could the same be happening to terrazzo?
