Ever wondered why it is bad to watch TV or use computer devices before you go to bed? This is because blue tinted light, typically emitted by screens of digital devices, suppresses the body's production of the sleep-inducing melatonin hormone. On the other hand, red tinted light encourages melatonin production and helps to put you to sleep. This is the inspiration behind the handsome Day&Night lights, created by Rotterdam-based design studio This is Bouw.
The light comes in two versions: the blue light is designed to be used during the day and the red light is to be used at night. Both are made of round dichroic glass filters on beautifully hand-crafted marble and wood bases with brass fittings. Once the light is plugged in it stays switched on for 6 hours before switching itself off. It will then switch itself on and off at the same times every day, which helps our bodies to establish a regular rhythm. Specifically designed to address the Seasonal Affective Disorder, the lights are a stylish way to keep everyone cheerful.
The Day&Night light is taking part in a Kickstarter campaign and is also a winner of the Wallpaper* Design Awards.
OLED lights, such as the Flying Ribbon suspension light from Blackbody, are great for beating SAD. Otherwise go for something fun and quirky, such as the Lampscapes floor light from Frederik Roije and the Olo table light from Moustache, which are bound to bring a smile to your face.
Mirrors are a great way to spread the light in a room. Try the Kaschkasch floor mirror from Menu for something slick and minimalist, or the Sunset mirror from Ghidini 1961 for a dash of flamboyance. If you are looking for something truly spectacular, the Lucky Eye wall OLED light and mirror from Blackbody is hard to beat.
