Courtyard Focus
How to combine outdoor living with the need for privacy? The answer, according to Christchurch-based Cymon Allfrey Architects, is to build a cluster of three wood cabins around a communal courtyard.
The main living space of this country home in New Zealand is housed in a low-slung structure with a striking slanting roof / wall on one side and a long glass sliding door on the other, which provides privacy and directs focus onto the patio area outside. The main cabin is flanked by a similar structure containing a bedroom suite, whilst a two-storey tower houses storage and further sleeping space. The latter is accessed via a striking metal staircase with yellow bannisters, a visual cue reprised in the yellow metal mesh gates elsewhere. The crowning glory of the house is the decked courtyard with its sunken lounging area, dining table and benches, gas barbecue and wooden hot tub. A perfect spot from which to contemplate the lovely garden and sculptural beauty of the house.
