Split Personality

Jenkins Street House by C. Kairouz ArchitectsWhen asked to modernise a charming but dilapidated art-deco house in Melbourne, the team at C. Kairouz Architects created an uplifting modern space which sits in delightful contrast with the original building.

The contemporary extension was built in the back yard of the house, reached via a dramatic steel and glass walkway which marks the transition between the old and the new.  The walkway is suspended over part of the swimming pool, its glass floor glowing with the shimmering lights from the pool in an impressive show of architectural theatre.

The open-plan living and dining space in the extension is flooded with light, thanks to the high slanted ceiling and extensive glazing.  The beautifully polished concrete floor provides a neutral setting for some stylish interior design features, including black kitchen cabinets and a huge marble-topped kitchen island with integrated seating.  Extra wow factor is provided by a bespoke TV stand atop a concrete unit between the dining and living spaces: not only does it rotate 360 degrees, it also has a mirror back which ensures attractive views from all angles.

This is a cleverly designed house where old and new, yin and yang are in perfect harmony.
