Industrial Family
The neighbourhood of Mount Lawley in Perth is dotted with industrial style buildings. So, when design and construction firm State of Kin was commissioned to create a new home for a young family, they took their inspirations from the area's industrial heritage and added clever contemporary touches.
This two-storey house is constructed with bricks reclaimed from demolished local buildings. This, together with the factory style sawtooth roofline and black metal framed windows, gives the house an authentic industrial feel whilst ensuring that it blends seamlessly into the neighbourhood.
Inside, the industrial theme continues. In addition to the brick walls, part of which are perforated to let air and light through, there are polished concrete floors, black kitchen cabinets and floating staircases. Upstairs, part of the floor over the living room has been replaced with mesh netting, turning it into a playful hammock which also lets light through to the floor below. The end result is an open and spacious home which showcases industrial style beautifully.
