The House of Many Houses

AA House by Office of Architecture in Barcelona

Nestled in a forest clearing in Sant Cugat del Vallès, north of Barcelona, is a remarkable house which looks sculptural and futuristic in equal measures.

Designed by OAB (Office of Architecture in Barcelona), this substantial family home is made up of a number of interconnected rectangular volumes which resemble a group of pavilions.  Double-height slanting roofs are aligned along a diagonal axis, which, together with the way the white cladding panels are arranged, accentuate the perspectives and offer a sense of dynamic movement.  Vast glazed walls at the end of the volumes provide more than a glimpse of the generously proportioned rooms inside, lit beautifully by the large windows created by the slanting roofs.  Four discrete staircases lead to the basement areas, which house the garage, staff quarters, a cinema room as well as an indoor swimming pool and spa area.  A more surprising and delightful addition to the landscape would be hard to find.

Product Inspiration

Evoke the spirit of this stunning house with furniture that combines sculptural shapes with slick finishes.  Try the Clay table from Desalto, the New Eiffel Tower chair from Coedition and the Longlegs shelves from Frederik Roije.

Sleek, minimalist lights would work well in such a dramatic space.  The Agata Circle suspension light from Incipit, the Five floor lamp from New Works and the Asterisco table light from LZF would all work well.

We love the way the Axonometry cube set from Ghidini 1961 echoes the slanted roofs of the AA house.  The Baltazar candle from Andrej Urem looks similarly sculptural, as does the Ven zippered pouch from Finell
