Ply-angular Pleasures

Scale of Ply by NOJI Architects

Plywood is often seen as a cheap and cheerful material, beloved of design students and a staple of DIY projects.  Modern plywood, when used cleverly, can be a strong and versatile building material which offers creative design possibilities, as this Victorian conversion in Dublin by NOJI Architects shows.

The architect's brief was to replace a poorly built conservatory with a light-filled, open-plan space.  Their solution is to use interconnecting plywood beams to create a series of triangular frames for the wall and ceiling panels, as well as a dramatic plywood lattice ceiling over the kitchen area.  The resulting triangular planes give the space a sense of dynamism, the sculptural quality subtly enhanced by the uniformity of the pale plywood used throughout.

The furniture was chosen with care to complement the design scheme.  The window frames, kitchen counter top, dining table top and the extensive window seat are all in black in contrast to the pale plywood, with flashes of bright yellow to provide visual interest.

This beautifully innovative house is a great advertisement of the possibilities of plywood and will surely stand the test of time.

Product Inspiration

We love pale wood furniture, especially the sculptural elegance of the Kuskoa chair from Alki and the simplicity of the Fan table from Desalto.

The wood veneer lights from LZF showcases the natural beauty of wood with wonderfully sculptural shapes.  Try the Swirl suspension light and the Anfora floor light.

Wood accessories such as the iPhone cases from Wood'd are beautiful and practical.  A good way of injecting a dash of natural wood into your design scheme is to use the Plywood Materials wallpaper from NLXL.  These patterns have no repeat, which offers a hyper-realistic image of wood panelling for your walls.
