The Modernista sofa is a sleek and versatile sofa designed by Doshi Levien for Moroso. The design of the sofa is inspired by Gregori Warchavchik, the Russian-Ukrainian architect responsible for promoting modern architecture in Brazil in the 1920s. The Modernista sofa has modernist lines with distinctive tufted buttons, a perfect marriage of classic elegance and comfort. The sofa works well at home and in public spaces such as reception areas and office.
The Modernista sofa is part of a collection which includes two and three seater sofas as well as armchairs, footstools, benches and occasional tables, all in multiple sizes. The covers of the sofa (which are not removable) can be upholstered in a huge range of fabrics, including leathers and COM. Please see the Product Tech Sheet for more details and contact us for more information on available options and advice on fabrics.
A new addition to the Modernista collection is the Casa Modernista sofa, featuring slightly more generous seat depth for extra comfort as well as removable covers without the tufted buttons.
Nipa Doshi was born in 1971 into a Gujarati family of Mumbai. She graduated from the Royal College of Art, London, in 1997 but she soon returned to India to work with local craftspeople. After a short stay she went back to London where she met Jonathan Levien, a Scot who had recently finished his master’s in furniture design at the Royal College. The synergy between Nipa and Jonathan clicked immediately; in fact they set up Doshi Levien in 2000 and got married. The combination of the two cultures and creativities generated a very special, innovative design concept. Nipa’s is heavily influenced by the visual culture and materials of India. Jonathan’s is rooted in industrial design. Together, their work celebrates cultural hybridism and explores a combination of technology, narration and industrial and craft design.
