Romanica is a creation of Spanish designer Mariví Calvo. Created in 1995, it is part of the first collection created by LZF Lamps and manufactured today as it was in the beginning: by hand, with a careful treatment in every step of the process. A clear example of the LZF philosophy, the Romanica proves that combining light and wood veneer has always been the main objective of the house’s innovative efforts. Its austere shape is a perfect companion to its warmness and makes it an ideal option for every kind of interior. Combining different sizes in the same space a surprising volume is achieved. Being such an early design, it is still manufactured featuring the original finish, using artificially reconstructed sheets of poplar wood that highlight the shape and wood grain.

The design starts with an investigation into the weaving technique of the kilim in order to emphasise the diagonal lines and horizontal features. The distinctive pattern is based on the geometric form of the triangle, reiterated to form a grid of different patterns, from which diamond and hexagonal shapes emerge. The colours present contrasting tones, creating woven kaleidoscopic rugs.

L'Afrique emerged from the collaboration with Land Rover in 2012 to 2013. Studio Job was asked to design and produce a unique, sculptural Land Rover Defender on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the iconic vehicle, which has strong roots in Africa. The designers turned to Vlisco, a Netherlands-based specialist manufacturer of African wax print fabrics, to create a specially designed fabric which was then used to upholster the seats of the car.

"Alt Deutsch" is a collection of patterns created by Studio Job from 2005 to 2012. The drawings that were used for this theme were all drafted with the same approach (emphasising the outline). In 2006, for example, they designed Underworld for a public project and in 2009 ING commissioned The Gospel. A number of new icons were also designed for The Book of Job in 2010. Adding these images together created a mash-up, a method of composition first used for the hand-painted furniture series Alt Deutsch in 2012.

The Archives collection of wallpaper from NLXL is a selection of seven designs from Studio Job's extensive library of icons and images, applying their trademark archetypical drawings and symbols to create unique patterns. This collection is a winner of the Editor’s award at ICFF New York in 2014.
Perished was created in 2005. The concept was to take furniture pieces, including a triptych bench, and veneer them with wood according to 17th century marquetry methods. Following a visit to the natural History Museum in New York, Studio Job designed a pattern made of skeletons of various dancing animals. Perished has been very successful since its introduction in Milan 2006 and has since been exhibited worldwide and added to important international collections.
Studio Job was founded in 1998 by Job Smeets, and later joined in 2000 by Nynke Tynagel, both graduates of the Design Academy Eindhoven. They have been hugely influential in elevating design arts in contemporary culture with their highly sought-after limited edition creations. His background being flora, he always applies plants in interiors since he sees this as an indispensable part, preferably unknown sculptural plants, as a special object. Thinking back to his childhood, as a small child, the image pops up of windows to which weeds or plants were stuck, due to condensation or water. As if they literally would bloom through the glass.

Between 1970 and 1980 she worked alongside Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass Jr. and Andrea Branzi in the Alchimia group, the most progressive set on the Italian design scene. She developed a highly productive and stimulating avant-garde stance. This gained her, in 1983, the prestigious Osaka International Design Award, bestowed for the first time that year. In December 2014 she was welcomed as a member of Interior Design Magazine’s Hall of Fame in New York.
Paola Navone is an architect. She is art director for Gervasoni and Kieffer by Rubelli.
