Bal House, Menlo Park by Terry & Terry Architecture

Ranch Extension

Bal House in Menlo Park, California, may look like an ordinary mid-century ranch house from the front.  A short stroll to the back garden, however, reveals a stunning extension which looks assertive but yet feels open and inviting.

The design by Terry & Terry Architecture features two timber-clad volumes which jut out at an angle from the existing house, to which they are connected via a transparent hallway.  The large sliding glass panels bring the outdoor and indoor spaces together and help to create the illusion that part of the garden is inside the house.  The deep overhanging roof, vast expanse of decking and a cantilevered concrete bench which mirrors the concrete walls elsewhere in the extension add further elements of cohesion to this outstandingly sculptural building.
