The Edge, Port Douglas, Australia: £3,000,000
The Edge of Paradise
The hype surrounding the latest James Bond movie Spectre has been almost overwhelming. One of the plot lines of the movie explains the backstory of Blofeld, the archetypal Bond villain familiar to Sean Connery era Bond fans the world over. The mere mention of Blofeld immediately evokes images of a white furry cat, a sleek leather armchair and, of course, a space-age secret lair which is luxurious and masculine in equal measures. The Edge, a stunning cliff-side house in Port Douglas in Australia, fits the bill perfectly.
What the agent says:
"THE EDGE is aptly named - this fabulous home is very edgy. Set high up and floating among the trees with the best view Port Douglas has to offer."
What we love:
The single-storey cantilevered structure was designed to be low-slung in order not to obstruct the breathtaking view of Four Mile Beach from a public viewing platform just above the house. However, with its diamond-like faceted exterior and vast open terrace framed by a ribbon-like infinity pool, the house is anything but discrete. Inside, the open plan living space is the epitome of masculine cool, with concrete surfaces punctuated by sculptural furniture pieces arranged to optimise the 180-degree view of the beach below. We especially like the infinity lap-pool which runs along the entire length of the terrace, creating a wonderful contrast to the sea as well as providing a natural cooling effect.
What can be improved:
We don't really understand the point of having a room divider / wall with a TV at the foot of the bed. Surely a view as stunning as this would beat anything Australian TV has to offer?
The Edge was designed by Charles Wright Architects and is the winner of the Building of the Year 2015 Architects Award. Prices and details correct as at 5 November 2015.
