Parisian Duplex by Sarah Lavoine

Colours of Paris

Many people are afraid of using strong colours at home.  However, as this beautiful Sarah Lavoine designed apartment in Paris shows, strong colours can create interiors of unparalleled style when used with intelligence and confidence.  Here are a few simple tips to follow.

First, start with a monochrome background.  The white ceiling and floor of this apartment work well with the black feature walls and steel staircase to create a neutral structure against which the brighter colours are showcased like jewels.

Secondly, choose a bold but simple colour palette.  The furniture and upholstery are in  pops of teal, mustard yellow, purple and emerald, which work wonders against the monochrome backdrop of the apartment.  With such intense colours there is no need for complicated patterns.

Lastly, go for furniture and accessories with strong sculptural shapes.  These look amazing against strong colours.

Use furniture in bright colours to add interest.  The pigeon blue of the Gavotte armchair from Moustache, the blue and orange of the Mathilda chair from Moroso and the signal red of the Chariot trolley from Casamania all have a strong presence.

Lights in simple shapes but strong colours make a real statement.  All LZF wood veneer lights come in multiple colours, such as this Escape suspension light in blue.  For something with a simpler silhouette, this Skylight Tower One suspension light from Frederik Roije looks great in copper green.

Use accessories such as this Fish Design bowl from Corsi to deliver a burst of colour.  Alternatively go for strong sculptural shapes such as this Transmission candle holder from Diesel Living.
