Mickey Drexler, who had built Gap into a leading global fashion chain and then did the same to J Crew, is not just a serial fashion entrepreneur extraordinaire, but also a renowned collector of trophy properties. He has recently put not one but two lofts in Tribeca for sale, having decided that he prefers to live on the Upper East Side. His loss is somebody else's gain, as this stunning loft style townhouse on Greenwich Street is truly outstanding (mind you he is hardly at a loss, having bought the property for USD 5.5 million in 2008).
What the agent says: "464 Greenwich Street is a 24-foot wide, 9,000 square foot Renaissance style loft building that has been completely renovated to the highest level possible, transforming this former industrial warehouse into one of the most luxurious single-family homes created in Manhattan...
The current owner commissioned the renowned French architect Thierry Despont to reimagine 464 Greenwich Street as a single-family residence. The result created an astounding combination of elegant, dramatic and beautifully designed spaces that distinguish this home from all others.
The home is filled with incredible fixtures, materials, finishes, appliances and custom designed elements that respect the historic, industrial past yet present a warm and inviting residential setting. Additional unique features include a grand entrance foyer with glass block inspired by Chareau's le Maison de Verre and a sprawling 1,500 square foot living room with over 12-foot high ceilings at the top of the building.
The property offers five bedrooms, five full bathrooms and two half-baths, a custom eat-in kitchen, rooftop terrace, gym, sauna and commercial-sized elevator."
What we love:
The sheer exuberant luxury of the decor: a mix of industrial features with furniture fit for a gentlemen's club from Mad Men spiced up with dazzling patterns (check out the wallpaper in the staircase). Proof that loft spaces don't have to mean industrial style minimalism.
What we would do:
Very little, really, other than to wallow in the extravagance of it all; though we do understand this style is not everybody's cup of tea.
The loft at 464 Greenwich Street is designed by Thierry Despont and is being marketed by Core (also on StreetEasy). Prices and details correct as at 5 May 2016.
For a truly spectacular chandelier which combines traditional craftsmanship and cutting edge technology check out the O Mi Kami suspension light from Blackbody. For something with a harder industrial edge try the Escappa suspension light from Do Master Scott Pirie.
Use quirky wallpapers, such as the marvellous Materials collection from NLXL, to set the scene for a standout design scheme.
