Artisanal Genius
Massimo Bottura, chef-proprietor of the highly acclaimed Osteria Francescana in Modena, is a creative genius who has elevated contemporary Italian cuisine to an art. His dishes are often inspired by art, such as a milk-marinated beef dish titled "Beautiful Naked Psychedelic Gherkin Exploding Tomato Sauce All Over Your Face" which was inspired by a Damian Hirst painting.
In this video shot at his recent pop-up restaurant event at Sotheby's in New York, Massimo Bottura explains how he sees himself as an artisan, not an artist; the difference being an artist has complete creative freedom whilst as an artisan his creativity needs to be focused on achieving his goal, which is to create great tasting food. The same could indeed be said for all designers and creative professionals and Massimo Bottura's success is a wonderful inspiration for all those who seek to tread the fine line between design and art.
