The Lime Works, Faversham: £1,500,000

Rural Industry

Many urban dwellers dream of escaping to the country but struggle to reconcile their urban aesthetics with the bucolic offer of thatched cottages and converted barns.  We have found a highly unusual property which might just square the circle.

What the agent says:"The Lime Works is an impressive and highly individual conversion of two water towers into a spacious and contemporary home.  This fascinating Grade II listed building was built in the early 1930s and was a functioning water softening plant until 1942.  The current owners acquired the property in 2005, and have sympathetically converted, restored and refurbished the building, with the emphasis on attention to detail and specification.  It is a wonderfully proportioned home; the spacious accommodation is well suited to entertaining on a large scale and caters equally for family living.  Internally, the accommodation is arranged over 4 floors.  The ground floor benefits from floor to ceiling windows, culminating in light and elegant living spaces.  A series of spiral staircases lead to the leisure facilities on the first floor and the bedrooms and bathrooms on the second floor.  The stunning master bedroom suite occupies the entire fourth floor and benefits from far reaching views over the grounds.  There are two roof terraces, one of which accommodates the pool and both which provides impressive outdoor entertainingspaces."

What we love:
The house, which is set in 8 acres of land, benefits from an unbeatable location in the beautiful Kent countryside, just outside the charming historic town of Faversham.  We love the outstanding design features and top notch specifications, especially the glazed triple-height living and dining spaces and the cantilevered concrete bed in the master bedroom.  Such well converted industrial buildings in the countryside are as rare as hen's teeth.

What can be improved:
The renovation is incomplete, so the buyer would need to finish the works, with the hassle (and opportunities) which this brings.  Also, if concrete is not your thing, this place is not for you.
