O-Series by Job van den Berg
More Than Skin Deep
Wood veneer is one of the unsung superheroes of the design world, widely applied on "lesser" materials such as MDF and plywood to "elevate" everything from floorboards to table tops.
Recognising the beauty and potential of the material, Dutch designer Job van den Berg created a series of shelves and lights using nothing but oak wood veneers. This is made possible by rolling the veneers into hollow tubes which are then connected to each other to create larger structures, without using any screws or glue. The resulting objects are strong yet light, the solid appearance of the surface in playful contrast to the hollow interior of the tubes. A clever homage to a ubiquitous material indeed.
The Table B from BD Barcelona Design also applies wood veneers onto hollow tubes (extruded aluminium in this instance) to great effect. The Flai Home Office from Mueller is made of laminated plywood, exposing the edges of the plywood beautifully. The Seiton shelves from Stellar Works is another shelving system using laminated boards which looks and works just as well as the O-Series.
Celebrate the beauty of natural wood finishes with accessories such as the Casiopea wall mirror from Agrippa, the Vertigo wall hanger from Nomon and the Vanilla Noir fruit bowls from Scarlet Splendour.
