Farm Fundamentals by Floris Meijer
The family of Dutch designer Floris Meijer has been dairy farmers for generations. When their farm was forced to close as part of the government's plan to reduce livestock emissions, Floris created a collection of everyday items inspired by life around the farm, creating mementos as a way to cope with loss.
The collection includes quirky ceramic tableware such as tea and coffee pots shaped after storage tank and silos, cups which resemble the teats of milking machines and plates shaped like the tags attached to cows' ears. All these are served on an old farmhouse table and chairs which, in a gesture of preservation, have been wrapped in plastic film normally used for baling hay. Those who are exhausted by all the toiling of the land can also rest on chairs and benches that look like metal and wooden fences.
As functional as they are sentimental, these objects commemorate a passing way of life with style and humour.
