Bosco Verticale Skyscrapers in Milan

Vertical Forest

Green architecture has been much discussed but few architects have realised the concept in such spectacular fashion as Stefano Boeri with the Bosco Verticale ("Vertical Forest").  The project comprises 2 residential towers on the edge of the Isola neighbourhood in Milan together hosting 900 trees and over 2,000 plants, all supported by a sophisticated irrigation system which recycles water used in the apartments.  This vertical forest equates to an area of over 7,000 square metres of forest on flat land.  The end result is not only visually stunning but also extremely environmentally sound.  Not only do the trees regulate heat by creating shade in the summer, they also create a microclimate, produce humidity, absorb CO2 and dust particles and produce oxygen.  Gives a whole new meaning to "tree house".
