The Library by A Work of Substance
Park & Party
Welcome to The Library, the ultimate man cave for design-obsessed petrolheads. The owner had remodelled the ground floor entrance of this exclusive private car park in Hong Kong (designed to house supercars) and turned an upper floor into his private car lounge. But this is no ordinary garage - when your car collection includes a Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, a Ferrari F40 and an Aston Martin DB5, bare concrete floors and fluorescent light strips will not do. Luckily, the Hong Kong and Paris based design agency A Work of Substance stepped up to the challenge and created a multi-functional space imbued with vintage industrial chic.
The ground floor entrance sets the tone with a security office in the shape of a 1950s Airstream trailer and a luxurious waiting lounge. The latter features leather banquettes which look like the backseat of a vintage car and side tables inspired by bolts and pistons.
This industrial-luxe theme continues upstairs in the owner's private carpark. Decorative wooden beams, resembling support struts of a suspension bridge, help to soften and demarcate the space. The windows are darkened by louvre shutters, creating a dramatic backdrop to showcase the owner's eight vintage cars. These are illuminated beautifully by ceiling spotlights, their elegant shapes reflected in the angled mirror panels on the walls.
The back of the space houses a bar and lounge area, with walls lined with custom built shelves and display cabinets full of motoring memorabilia. The hand-stitched leather seats, dark wood panelling and moody lighting help to create the vibe of a gentlemen's club. There is also a racing stimulator tucked away at the end of a passageway in addition to a gleaming kitchen and an opulent powder room.
The level of detailing is exquisite throughout, from wall-mounted shelves that flip open to reveal seats to headlight-inspired lanterns and fold-down armrests in the banquette seats. This unmistakably masculine space oozes style and luxury, the perfect hangout for design aficionados and autophiles alike.
