How does one incorporate Persian design influences into a modern apartment in Kiev? The answer, according to Keivani Architects and Studio Persian Primavera, is of course to use an industrial style design scheme.
This quirky 101 square metre apartment may look industrial with its concrete ceilings, brick walls and light fixtures made with rebar steel poles, but the design inspirations are more 1001 Arabian Nights. The Persian influences are most obvious in the use of the sun as design motif. Abstracted into a series of triangles and 12-sided polygons, as is common in traditional Persian architecture, the motif appears repeatedly in lights and wall panel decorations. There is also an intriguing set of freestanding concrete steps which climb half way up a wall in the dining room, leading to a small cantilevered platform. This design references mihrabs in mosques and ziggurats, a symbolic act of rising up to reach the sun, the ultimate source of knowledge, wisdom and inspiration.
Add a touch of industrial lustre to your space with the rusted look of the Roest suspension light from Karven, the 90 Degrees wall light from Frama and the Teka table light from Blackbody.
Combine utility and metallic shine in accessories such as the Wine Cool Breather from Menu, the Tumbrella stand from Ghidini 1961 and the Spire metal wall hooks from Finell.

Minimalism is about much more than empty spaces. It is the artful use of light, colour and objects to define spaces, creating an atmosphere that is warm and contemplative. The BU1H house, designed by Igor Sirotov Architects, is a great example.
