Holiday at Home
The owners of this house on the edge of a lake in Poznan in Poland wanted to create a country home which reminds them of their exotic holidays around the world. The architects at Urbe rose to the challenge with a design which captures the joy and wonders of travelling beautifully.
The heart of this house is a large double height living room which runs to almost the entire length of the building. In lesser hands this might become a cold, soulless space. Instead, the room is filled with imaginative design features at every turn.
The wooden planks of the floorboard morph into slatted frames which climb up the wall and across the ceiling. The dining area is dominated by a 6 metre high mural of abstract banana leaves made with intricate inlays of different wood veneers. The kitchen and entrance hallway have mirrored ceilings, which give them a spacey, futuristic vibe, reinforced by the curvaceous furniture and a touch of metallic gloss. Bevelled coloured glass panels are a recurring decorative motif, suspended in frames and glittering like jewels.
The colours are designed to evoke the pleasures of a summer's day by the beach with liberal splashes of lemon yellow, lilac, turquoise and pink. The colours in the bedrooms may be more subdued but they are equally packed with creative features. We particularly like the gradient paintwork, tiled panels in the bathroom and the witty ceiling lights. This is a cheerful house which lifts the spirit at every turn, just like a good holiday.
