Concrete Cool

Loft MDP by FFWD

Stone, wood and bricks are the raw ingredients of this old carpenter's workshop in Barcelona.  These have been skilfully remixed by architects FFWD to create a contemporary loft home that feels as warm as it looks cool.

Once the structure of the building has been repaired, the architects are left with an attractive space with brick walls on one side, stone walls on the other, wooden beams on the ceiling and plenty of windows, which flood the space with a warm glow.  The different levels of the building are unified by a seamless polished concrete floor.  The same concrete also forms part of the structure of the sunken living area, the kitchen counter and the bathroom fixtures.  A generously proportioned master suite occupies one end of the building and has sliding wall panels which can be used to screen off the bed and bathroom areas.

The house exudes an air of cool throughout and is a great example of how appealing loft style living can be.

Industrial Style

Product Inspiration

Simple, sculptural furniture work wonderfully well in loft style spaces.  Try the Fan table from Desalto, the Utility chair from Stellar Works and the concrete Stool Bridge from Lyon Beton.

Keep lighting simple with a monochrome colour palette and a strong emphasis on materials.  The Sliced Sphere suspension light from Frederik Roije and the Hang On Honey pendant light from New Works both look sleek and industrial.  The cast iron Mr Ed bookend light from Functionals is highly practical and looks very cool too.

Concrete accessories is a great way to add a touch of industrial cool to any interior space.  We love the Pipeline Stem vase from Lyon Beton as well as the  concrete Bowler hat from Seletti.  The photorealistic wallpaper from NLXL, such as this Spoiled Copper pattern, is another easy way to create the industrial look.

Japanese zen style goes far beyond minimalist white spaces. It is about thoughtful spaces which encourage the contemplation of light, colours, textures and shapes - the building blocks of nature and beauty. The Shutter House in Perth is a great example.

Terrazzo Things from Lick My Brick

There was a time when the use of marble was largely restricted to floors, posh kitchen counters and grave statutes. And then, at some point around the mid-noughties, marble was everywhere. Could the same be happening to terrazzo?
